Materials Processing Department

of  Southwest Jiaotong University

     Brief Introduction     

The Materials Processing Department of Southwest Jiaotong University has trained more than 1800 undergraduates, 300 postgraduate students,occupies a laboratory area of more than 2000 m2, has equipment total assets of more than 20 million yuan and more than 500 sets of equipment. So far, teaching and scientific research platforms which include Sichuan key laboratory of advanced welding technology, International Welding Engineer (IWE) joint training base, welding research institute, thermal spray research institute, institute of lightweight transportation equipment and national high-speed railway seamless welding technology training center have been built. Meanwhile, the laboratory which belongs to the material forming and control engineering major is an important component of scientific research and teaching platforms which include national laboratory of rail transit, national experimental teaching demonstration center for materials science and engineering and key laboratory of advanced materials technology of ministry of education.

By now the department has 29 full-time teachers, with 5 high professional titles and 12 secondary senior tittles, the teachers with senior titles accounts for 58.62% of the total teachers; There are 17 teachers who have doctor's degree, 4 doctoral supervisors, 24 master tutors, one specialist who enjoys the State Council special allowance, one excellent expert who makes outstanding contributions to Sichuan Province, one Sichuan science and technology pioneering talent, one of the Thousand Talents Program  in Sichuan, and two teachers who are in Chengdu talent plan in the Materials Processing Department of Southwest Jiaotong University.

     Scientific Research     

In the past 5 years, the Materials Processing Department of Southwest Jiaotong University has undertaken “national key research and development program”,“973 preplanned project”, “national natural science foundation of China”, “national science and technology support program” and more than 80 important projects including major industry university research cooperation, whose research fund is nearly 100 million yuan. More than 20 patents were applied and more than 200 scientific papers, including over 100 papers in SCI and EI index were published.

Prof. Chen Hui, executive deputy director of Qingdao Graduate School of Southwest Jiaotong University/key materials and technology center of railway transportation/Research center of Sichuan advanced welding and surface engineering; leader of Sichuan science and technology innovation youth research team of "key materials and service safety evaluation technology of railway transportation"; outstanding contribution expert in Sichuan province; the academic and technical leader in Sichuan province; talent of entrepreneurial leader in Sichuan province; high-level talent of Chengdu municipal party committee organization department; innovative and entrepreneurial talent of technology in chengdu; invited expert of policy research office in Sichuan provincial government; invited expert of Scientific and technical advisory team in Chengdu; deputy director of standardization committee of China engineering construction association; vice chairman and secretary general of Sichuan welding society.

In the last decade, he has been focusing on key materials and welding technology of high speed EMU based on the national development strategy of rail transit, he also studied the formation of database of high speed EMU structure welding residual stress, fatigue, corrosion and other service performance based on the development strategy of National high-speed rail including--"introduction, digestion, absorption and innovation", which has formed a safety reliability evaluation technology of the whole life cycle and building a predictability platform for welding process of aluminum alloy car-body; he made breakthroughs in the key technology of the laser arc hybrid welding for high speed train key technology as well as equipment upgrade and innovation, improving the production efficiency, quality and safety of high speed EMUs and boosting China's high-speed EMU welding manufacturing upgrade innovation; he researched on the promotion and innovation of aluminum alloy materials for high speed EMUs and its material genome technology, making contributions to the innovation of China's high speed EMU aluminum alloy upgrade; he studied on the key wear resistant materials for large construction machinery of high speed and heavy haul railway, achieving its upgrade and re-innovation of home-made parts. He has published 3 monographs and more than 120 papers, more than 70 of which were included in SCI/EI index.
