Welding Technology and Engineering

in Lanzhou University of Technology

     Brief Introduction     

Welding technology and engineering is one of the prestigious disciplines in Lanzhou University of Technology (located in Lanzhou city, Gansu province), and was established in 1965. In 2007, it was authorized as a national characteristic discipline. By the supporting of this discipline, the materials processing engineering in Lanzhou University of Technology was the first engineering doctoral degree conferring spot in Gansu province. In the department of welding technology and engineering, there are 24 faculty members, among which there are 13 professors and 11 doctoral advisors. There are 871 full-time students, with 76 doctoral and postgraduate students, and over 3000 alumni in almost every industry.

     Scientific Research     

The projects including “863”, “973” and Natural Science Foundation of China, over 30 items, were carried out by the department of welding technology and engineering. “Study on high-speed surfacing process with wide strip” was awarded as the third prize of scientific and technological progress by State Ministry of Machinery Industry; “Seam tracing and controlling in submerged arc welding with fine wire” the third prize of scientific and technological progress by State Bureau of Machinery Industry. In the last three years, over 50 papers in SCI index, 80 papers in EI index and 20 papers in ISTP index were published, and over 20 invention patents were authorized. The department of welding technology and engineering, as a well-known department in the welding and joining research field, makes the significant contribution to the national and local economic development.

 

 

Metal Fracture Mechanism Group.

In more than 30 years of research on the micromechanism of cleavage fracture, the group has contributed valuable results that have formed an integrated system with some distinctions of viewpoints. Prof. Chen, was awarded as Lifetime Achievement by Welding Society of Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society (CMES) in 2008. In 2014, the book entitled “Micromechanism of cleavage fracture of metals”, as a summary of their over 30 years work in this research field, was published by Elsevier LTD.

 

Dissimilar Metal Joining Group.

This group focuses on the joining of dissimilar metals, such as Al-steel, Al-Cu, Mg-steel, Al-Ti and etc. by developing or using the innovative and high-efficient methods, by-pass coupled arc MIG welding, cold metal transfer welding, laser-arc hybrid welding.

 

Active Welding Group.

This group focuses on developing A-TIG. The agents for A-TIG were applied in the high-efficient welding of low carbon steel and stainless steel for the purpose of increasing depth of fusion and undercut elimination. The invention patents (CN200510043013.8 and CN02114494) of this technology were transferred to the corresponding companies. This group is also interested in laser-arc hybrid welding and laser powder cladding.

 

Ultra-Narrow-Gap Welding Group

This group focuses on the developing of ultra-narrow-gap welding method. The gap can be limited to ~ 3-4 mm, this technology has a widely application in welding of rail steel and special steel structure (such as sandwich panel structure). This group is also interested in the fabrication of ultrafine powder by using wire electrical explosion technology.

 

Ultrasonic Assisted Brazing Group

This group focuses on the ultrasonic assisted active brazing of graphite, ceramics to metals. Characterization of wettability and wetting mechanism at high temperatures. Development of low melting point solder for the aviation forged aluminum alloy.

 

Solid Phase Joining Group.

This group focuses on the development of fricition stir welding and friction welding methods for solid phase joining, welding process control and welding automation, development of some special equipments for non-ferrous metal smelting process.
