Pulsed Double Electrodes GMAW-Brazing: Process and Properties

   Abstract / 摘 要    

A novel pulsed double electrodes gas metal arc welding process, whose fundamentals were different from the current precise controlled arc welding processes, was pioneering proposed in this paper. The pulsed double electrodes gas metal arc welding benefits the precise control of metal transfer and heat input to the base materials, which was demonstrated by both theoretical analysis and experimental investigation. Aluminum and steel dissimilar base materials were joined by this novel method. Some main system parameters to influence the metal transfer in pulsed double electrodes gas metal arc welding process, such as bypass parameters and pulsed current, were analyzed. The interface of aluminum/steel welded joints was analyzed by SEM and EDS. The effect of the alloying elements Si and Mg on the mechanical properties and microstructure of the joints was studied. It was found that the infiltration angle of the welded joint by Al-Mg wire was larger than that by Al-Si wire. The alloying element Si could change the interface reaction layer metal and the thickness of the Fe2Al5 layer was also significantly reduced. The tensile test showed that welded joints by Al-Mg wire mainly cracked in the interface reaction layer, brittle fracture. Welded joints by Al-Si wire cracked in the aluminum fusion zone, ductile fracture mainly composed of mixed fracture. The corrosion behavior of aluminum/steel welded joints by Al-Si and Al-Mg filler wire was studied. The corrosion behavior of welded joints was studied by immersion corrosion test and electrochemical corrosion test. The corrosion morphology of welded joints after corrosion test was observed and analyzed by SEM. Welded joints occurred the galvanic corrosion in the corrosion solution, and the corrosion rate of the welded joints accelerates with the increase of the heat input of the base metal. The corrosion rate of welded joints by Al-Si wire was slightly larger than that by Al-Mg wire.

Yu Shi is currently a professor and PhD tutor at Lanzhou University of Technology. He received PhD degree on Material processing engineering in Lanzhou University of Technology, China, in 2005. His research interests include welding physics and welding intelligent control. He researched at University of Kentucky welding laboratory twice, during which he participated in two NNSF (US) projects and a Los Alamos US National Laboratory project, and made important contributions. Now he is the Dean of School of Materials Science and Engineering of Lanzhou University of Technology. In addition, he is a member of the Robotics and Automation Committee of the Welding Society of the CMES, the Secretary General of the Gansu welding society, and a project evaluation expert of the NNSF of China.
